What will it cover?

The aim of this workshop is to provide attendees with an introduction to what peer support is and develop practical and theoretical tools to support themselves and others. The workshop will explore the definition and principles of peer support, explaining what it is and its core values. Furthermore drawing from the principles of person centred support, solution-focused therapy and motivational interviewing to develop communication skills, teaching techniques for effective listening and how to express empathy and compassion. 

The training aims to cover:

  • How to have difficult conversations about mental health
  • Recognise the responsibilities and qualities of a peer supporter
  • Learn how to use your lived experience to support yourself and others
  • Explore the importance of professional boundaries and how to effectively manage endings
  • Develop active listening skills
  • Understand how to skilfully ‘give advice’ and signposting people to support
  • Looking after your own wellbeing and resilience and addressing burnout
